  • CMH-17: Composite Materials Handbook

    Ongoing Advancements in the Field of Composite Materials

     

    BTG Labs maintains an important connection to  CMH-17, the Composite Materials Handbook. BTG Labs recently attended a regular conference which brings groups and companies together for the discussion of developing and engineering composite materials. Members also give presentations on the latest in composite developments.

    BTG Labs ‘ special connection began in 2004 when Giles Dillingham, CEO and Chief Scientist of BTG Labs read that CMH-17 declared surface preparation as the number 1 problem in manufacturing implementation. This promoted a lack of trust in adhesive bonding. Thus, a need to monitor, measure, and maintain surface processes began to take shape.

    These were some of the first murmurings that lead to the idea that a better way in which to measure and monitor surface process was needed. Today, the Surface Analyst™ provides a way to confidently measure and monitor surface sensitive processes. At BTG Labs, we continue to evolve our technology every day and the resources such as CMH-17 help move us forward.

  • A Gathering of Chemical Professionals

     

    Dr. Giles Dillingham, BTG’s CEO and Chief Scientist, will present at the American Chemical Society (AMS) National Meeting and Expo 2016. The Expo takes place August 21-25 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. AMS brings together chemical professionals from around the world to exchange ideas and advancements. With over 300 exhibitors and over 8,000 papers presented, this event provides endless information on the latest in knowledge and chemical advances.

    Dr. Dillingam’s Presentation on Surface Contaminants

     

    During the event, Dr. Dillingham will present as part of a symposium organized by The Dow Chemical Company entitled, “Polymer Adhesives and Adhesion by Design: Fundamentals to Applications.”His presentation, based on the article, “A New Approach for the Evaluation  of the Effects of Contaminants on Surface Sensitive Processes” addresses methods of evaluating surface contaminants and ways to improve those methods.

    BTG Labs looks forward to co-hosting a booth with Vapormatt at The Composites and Advanced Materials Expo (CAMX) 2016. The expo will take place September 26-29, 2016 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. This event emerged from a collaboration between the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) and the Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering (SAMPE) two of the leading representatives of the composites and advanced materials industry.

    CAMX connects various members of the world’s diverse composites and advanced materials communities. These industries range from medical to aerospace to energy, and more. This gives members of this community to share, learn, and connect on the latest advancements of the industry.

  • Grit-Blasting and Surface Energy

    Unraveling Grit-Blasting Effects

     

    This paper is part of an ongoing collaboration between Dr. Giles Dillingham, BTG Lab’s chief scientist, and other members of the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Chemical and Material Engineering, Boeing, and the Materials Directorate of the Wright Patterson Air Force Base to study the effects of grit-blasting on graphite/epoxy composites.

    Grit-blasting, a commonly used surface preparation process  frequently applies to polymer composites. However, very little experiments and observations exist concerning the effects of grit-blasting on the surface properties of composites. …Read More
